Getting started

How do I count animals or plants?
Tap Take Photo or Choose from Library on the home screen. Once your photo loads, select the category that matches what you want to count — Poultry, Sheep, Cattle, Plants, or Other. Herdcount marks each one with a numbered dot. Review the result, adjust the count with the +/− buttons if needed, then tap Save.
What if the app doesn't recognise what I'm counting?
Choose Other from the category grid, then tap directly on one example of the object in your photo. Herdcount will find similar items throughout the image.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes — always. All detection runs on your device using a built-in AI model. No internet connection is required at any point.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Herdcount has no accounts, no sign-in, and no cloud connection. Your data never leaves your device.

Accuracy

Some animals are being missed. What can I do?
A few things help:
  • Take the photo from a slightly higher angle so animals don't overlap as much
  • Reasonable lighting makes a real difference — very dark or washed-out photos reduce accuracy
  • Use the + button to add any that were missed
  • Tap any dot to remove a false positive
The count is off — can I fix it before saving?
Yes. Use the +/− buttons on the result screen to adjust the count to the correct number before saving. The app records both the AI count and your adjusted count.
Will accuracy improve over time?
The built-in model covers common livestock well (chickens, sheep, cattle) and works best with clear photos taken from above. Future updates will include a model tuned specifically for eggs, hay bales, and seedlings.

Count history

Where are my saved counts stored?
All counts are stored privately on your iPhone. They appear on the home screen and are never uploaded anywhere.
How do I delete a count?
Swipe left on any count in the history list and tap Delete.
Can I export my records?
Yes — tap the share/export button on the history screen to export all your counts as a CSV file. You can share it via AirDrop, email it to yourself, or save it to the Files app.
How many counts does the app store?
There's no limit. All counts are kept until you delete them.

Photos and privacy

Does Herdcount upload my photos anywhere?
No. Photos are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to any server. Herdcount has no server at all.
Why does the app need camera access?
To let you take photos directly in the app. You can also use your photo library — camera access is only used when you tap Take Photo.
Why does the app need photo library access?
Only to let you select a photo you've already taken. Herdcount reads only the photo you explicitly choose — it does not scan or access your whole library.

Purchases and pricing

Is Herdcount a subscription?
No — it's a one-time purchase. Pay once, use it forever, no recurring charges.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request one.
